How to Support a Loved One Who’s Using Hearing Aids for the First Time
When someone close to you starts using hearing aids, it’s a big step—for both of you.
They may feel self-conscious, overwhelmed, or frustrated. You may feel unsure of what to say—or what not to say.
Here are some simple ways to offer genuine support as they adjust:
✅ Be patient.
They’re re-learning how to hear. Background noise, volume shifts, and sensory overload can feel intense at first. Give them time to adjust.
✅ Speak clearly—without shouting.
Look at them when you speak. Say their name to get their attention. Speak at a normal pace. There’s no need to over-enunciate or raise your voice.
✅ Ask how you can help.
Would they like you to repeat something differently? Sit on a specific side? Help remember where they set their charger? A small question can go a long way.
✅ Be encouraging.
Celebrate their progress. “I noticed you heard the doorbell today!” or “You followed that whole conversation—we used to have to repeat that part!”
✅ Learn with them.
